It was a crush—literally—getting into the Cartier mansion on Fifth Avenue at the jeweler’s celebration of 100 years in America. Ask the fashion editor whose foot was squished by Justin Timberlake’s planet-sized bodyguard (turns out this was a minder with a conscience, though—”I am so, so sorry,” he said, while JT distracted the limping lady with flattery). Things were just as snug over at the elevator. “My, this is cozy,” said Sir Elton John as more and more people piled in. “I might go mad in here.”

Whatever it took to get upstairs was worth it, though. “Did you see the big one, with 230 carats?” Kate Hudson asked Zac Posen, remarking on a ridiculously large diamond necklace. “I just want to make love to it.” She wasn’t the only one feeling the love. In a room wallpapered with images from the book Bruce Weber was commissioned to make in honor of the centennial milestone, Tory Burch waxed rhapsodic about the photographer’s work. “It’s so original, so romantic, so America,” said the designer. “Maybe in a few decades, when I can afford him, he can shoot my campaign.” In the meantime, she’ll have to settle for more of his books—just not this one. Turns out Cartier didn’t produce enough in time to sell them at the fête. “I guess I’ll have to come back,” Dr. Lisa Airan said. “Not that I’ll mind.”

Starstruck Parsons students rubbed elbows with fashion royalty at the design school’s annual black-tie benefit Wednesday night at Cipriani Wall Street. The dining room was full of expert stitchers, but Eva Mendes, who accompanied honoree Francisco Costa, wasn’t one of them. “I don’t know what to do with thread or a needle,” she admitted. “But I’m a crazy, amazing flower arranger! Just drop off your flowers and I will have an exotic bouquet for you.” She’ll also have a Costa gown for the Met ball, she revealed.

Two graduating seniors shared Designer of the Year Awards—kind of a big deal, considering that the Proenza Schouler boys and Marc Jacobs (in attendance) have won in the past. Taking the stage, fellow alum Peter Som recalled the two main questions he asked himself during his student years: “Would I sleep for the next week?” And “how much ramen could I survive on?” Fashion school dean Simon Collins affirmed that Parsons is no place for slackers. “Our students barely raised their heads” when headline-grabbing protesters occupied a New School building a few weeks ago, he boasted. “We work them pretty hard.”

Offering some tough love of her own, New York Times critic Cathy Horyn read three bits of advice into the mike: “Avoid using the word genius,” “stop looking at other people’s work for inspiration,” and “perfect your craft.” Now’s a great time to work on that last one, she added. “Some of you probably won’t get jobs for a while.”

“Don’t you just love the heat, the passion?” asked Jerry Hall. The unstoppable supermodel joined Oscar de la Renta on the judging panel for this year’s El Botón—Mango Fashion Awards in a sizzling Barcelona on Wednesday. “Spain is always hot,” she said. As a girl who used to run around these parts with Mick Jagger, she should know. But fashion legends weren’t the focus last night; it was fashion’s future, as in young designers, that everyone was talking about. Earlier, de la Renta had presented Korean up-and-comer Jin Youn Lee with the €300,000 award, the largest prize in the textile industry.

To celebrate, Mango put on a runway show at its design compound, a converted airplane hangar filled with fabrics, dress forms, and Picassos and Mirós, and invited the likes of Leigh Lezark, Daisy Lowe, and Riley Keough—who just so happen to be the future faces of the label. After the show, Solange Knowles took the mike. Her spirited performance not only had the audience on its feet, but also drew many to the stage itself. “What are you doing?” Beyoncé’s sis asked. “This is a concert! Not a rave.”
